About

Our image library is a valuable resource for our educational programs. It consists of more than one million images of nature, wildlife, and the environment. Generous photographers have shared their images with the Institute, where we maintain a file of each of their images to ensure proper credit as they are used.

Many of the images are Joan's, taken on her travels around the globe, and her numerous years working with wildlife. Sometimes an image can say more than words to connect with people's imaginations and emotions. Photographers often spend hours, days, even weeks and months waiting for the opportunity to capture their subjects at the perfect moment. They enable us to see those special moments we may not ever see ourselves.

With so many incredible images, the key to our library is organization, so we are able to quickly find just the right image we are looking for. It can be time consuming work but it is very rewarding to be able to effectively create interesting and educational visual programs.

Ron Garrison, who spent 40 years managing the image library for the Zoological Society of San Diego, has been instrumental in developing our image library, and providing many of the images. He is a master at correcting, cropping, and enhancing images, and has used his years of experience to properly ID each image. Below is a link to his website, with countless more beautiful images.
