Squeeze Ball Python
IUCN: Least Concern
The royal python (Python regius), commonly known as the ball python, is frequently found in the grasslands and savannas of its native Central and West Africa. The genus Python includes nonvenomous flecked snakes, and the ball python receives its name for its tendency to curl into a ball when stressed.
Squeeze's coloration is typical of ball pythons, consisting of dark brown or black with lighter-colored splotchs on top and a creamy coloring on the underside. Reaching a length of up to six feet at maturity, ball pythons are actually the smallest Python members. They are mainly terrestrial, docile snakes, which makes Squeeze a great animal ambassador for those who meet him for the first time.
Fun Fact: In southeastern Nigeria, the Igbo (or Ibo) people revere ball pythons as both human ancestors and as messengers of the soil goddess. If a ball python is accidentally killed, the Igbo consider this bad luck and will perform a funeral for it.
