Bunji Laughing Kookaburra
IUCN: Least Concern
Native to eastern Australia, the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is the largest kingfisher. Bunji's name is an Aboriginal slang word for mate, or friend.
Bunji's long, sharp, pointed bill, large head, stubby tail, and short legs are common features of all 114 kingfisher species. Despite their name, many kingfishers do not live near the water or eat fish. Laughing kookaburras eat a varied diet that commonly includes mice and similar small mammals, lizards, snakes, various invertebrates, and small fish.
Fun Fact: The sound of a laughing kookaburra is often used as a stock sound effect in the film industry. From the adventures of Tarzan to Indiana Jones, laughing kookaburras can often be heard in the background of some of our favorite movies' jungle scenes.
