The horned owl gets its name from the tufts of feathers over its ears appearing like horns.  The male’s territorial call “hoo-hoo-hooooo-hoo-hoo” can be heard over several miles during a still night.  Silent hunters, they are capable of taking prey 2-3 times heavier than themselves.  Food items include mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and even skunks.  Their binocular vision is 100 times as powerful as ours.
